GISELLE
Giselle is an original musical adaptation (written and scored by Cassian Grove and Rory John) of Adolphe Adam’s 1841 romantic ballet of the same name, which loosely reconfigures the plot of the original ballet into a kaleidoscopic ghost story told through Appalachian folksong.
When the sickly Giselle is betrayed by the man she loves at the harvest festival, she goes mad and dances herself to death—only to return and join the ranks of the Wilis, the ghosts of women wronged by men, who spend eternity wreaking supernatural feminist justice and protecting their own. Five archetypal storytellers weave together history, myth, and song to bring the story to life in an immersive show about vengeance, dancing, and death.
